The Role
The placement was really enganging and extremely beneficial. The only thing that stopped me giving it 10 is that due to the university summer coinciding with the accounting 'quiet' period meaning sometimes work was a little broken up (but this is very minor).
This is something I found that grew. When starting out, colleagues were obviously unsure of skill level - however as I completed work it became clear they trusted me and they in turn trusted me with more work, which they really appreciated help with in my experience. There was a great social atmosphere - the key is just to try and break the ice and find something in common.
Possibly the best point of a PwC internship is the support you are given. It is very much a sink or swim type of work; you are thrown in at the deep end - however, you are not allowed to sink. I found I was given brief coaching and told to look at examples of work to complete my taks. However if I had any questions then colleagues (team managers, my buddy etc.) were more than happy to help. You are stretched to just outside your comfort zone with the level of coaching which I found really benefited my development. There is always someone on hand to help if needed.
On the days when I was assigned work, I found I was very busy. As I have mentioned before, the internship did coincide with the accounting quite period through the summer, so I found there were the odd days where I had very little. In my experience there is always something for you to do.
In terms of the work assigned I found I was given quite a lot of responsibility. Obviously the work given is not the high level work, however I found I was trusted to work independently and use my own methods to carry out the work I was assigned. I also feel the level of responsibility given increases as you're colleagues get to know you and your abilities.
As an Accounting and Finance student I expect the skills I learnt will be very beneficial in this, my last, year at university. With regards to a future job, I believe the past 6 weeks will be invaluable. The insight helped me decide if it was for me (which it is) but also I learnt how things work; techical skills, meaning in the future I won't be starting as a complete blank canvas.
The Company
When people were there in the office the atmosphere was really good. I found I was in a small office so the quiet accounting period meant a lot of people were on holiday and thus there wasn''t always a great atmosphere.
Extremely, everything is structured and organised for you in terms of infrastructure.
You are given an entire week of training, both in office and at a residential course. You are then coached on each task as and when you need it.
Company Parties/Events
Great, I really enjoyed it.
The Culture
Definitely, I was in a quiet office, however I heard the bigger offices had various intern socials.
Pretty cheap area.
It was really good, Norwich is a nice area, and the team often went out for drinks after work which I was invited to.
I went to a few dinners and socials. I was also asked to join in an inter-office football game; sadly it turned out it was after my internship finished - but the offer was nice.
