The Role
A lot of variation in work, other people in the company were very welcoming and good natured and the internship as a whole was well organised.
Represented my team in conference calls and meetings and was given a good amount of independence in m projects.
My manager and other people in my team were always willing to answer questions or point me in the right direction if I was a bit uncertain.
As expected, the start of the internship was a bit quiet, allowing me to find my feet. The nature of the role also meant there were times where I couldn't really do much without e-mails from other people so if I was waiting on them, it could be a bit frustrating. However, I took on a larger project in the second half of the internship which took a lot of work, but was really enjoyable.
I was pretty much in charge of my projects, although naturally they may not have been large compared to some of the other ones going on. As mentioned above, I was a team representative for conference calls and meetings related to my projects, although other people in my team were always willing to help when I needed it.
Developed communication & presentation skills, which is something I haven't had much chance to develop as a maths & theoretical physics student, which will come in useful next year.
The Company
The people I was with were really nice, everyone says hi to each other and there is some good chat although there are also times when people are focussed on their work.
Induction and training for the first three days (both in and out of the office) ot get everyone up to speed. Plenty of networking lunches to learn about different areas. Regular catch ups with managers and HR to make sure everything is on track or discuss any issues.
External training courses, regular catch ups to identify what I need to develop and how to do so.
Company Parties/Events
Most people got grad jobs for next September. I may be going back for another internship next year as I graduate in two years.
The Culture
All the interns were pretty friendly. We went out for drinks fairly regularly. Also went out for drinks with people from my team occasionally. Went to a cricket match at the Oval with them and a few other teams on my floor as well.
City of London is obviously a hell of a lot more expensive than the midlands, but there were places which were quite reasonable.
Didn't see too much of it, but there are a few good pubs and bars, even if they are a bit pricey.
Went to a graduate volunteering event at a local farm, the Oval isn't too far away and did a few waiting & bar shifts for the London arm of the agency I work for in Birmingham.
