The Role
I found my internship very enjoyable and completely worthwhile. The support I received from the managment in my branch was fantastic and the level of responsibilty given to me was a clear indication of the trust they had in me.
Feedback was constantly given to ensure that I was being recognised for anything positive I had done. The working relationship that everyone has within my branch is like no other working environment I have worked in and that stretches from management to customer service reps. Enterprise encourages the recognition of good an/or hard work and it certainly makes a difference when anything I contributed was noticed and commented on.
My branch manager was always the first to provde all the support I ever needed during my internship. Although I was given a lot of responsibilty he would ensure he was available to assist if I ever required it. We would meet on a monthly basis and officially discuss performance, etc however the level support provided went much further than that.
Working at the Glasgow Airport branch means that everyday is fast paced and extremely busy meaning I was on my feet all day. This is a positive thing and means that everday is different and the challenges you face vary as well, ultimately making the internship all the more rewarding.
As I have already mentioned I was given a great deal of responsibility on a day to day basis which has helped me a great deal and will serve me well in the future. At times I was given full control of the branch and trusted to make important decisions that would impact on the customer and the other members of staff. This is something that I enjoyed very much and made my experience completely worthwhile and enjoyable.
Training was short and brief with some areas being more relevant than others. Working in an airport means that you deal with a specific time of customer who have different needs to those in a city centre location so there could have been more opfof a focus on that for interns like myself. There was not a great deal covered regarding the computer systems on the official training week however, personally I believe that this is something that comes quicker on the job and makes you a more efficient worker.
The Company
On most days the atmosphere was excellent and there was no negativity among any of us. It is a busy workplace and when the workload piles up some members of staff would become stressed however I found I was able to overcome this and bring the stress levels down and create a much calmer environment for people.
We are given goals that are very achievable within the 3 month internship and really have the freedom to go above and beyond those if we are motivated enough to do so. The monthly meeting with managers is helpful in structuring the internship as well.
Certain aspects of my performance such as sales were given much more attention than perhaps my management, delegation or people skills. However I do believe that if I had spent a longer period of time there I would have been given plenty opportunity to show these skills and develop them further and show I am amangement material.
I have been made aware that I would make a good fit in the company and I am more than welcome to return upon graduation which is very encouraging and highlights how well I have done. The prospect of returning and having the opportunity to see more of the organisation and how different sectors work (outwith the airport) is very appealing to me.
The Culture
Whenever we met there was always a great atmosphere and you realise you are very much like your colleagues which makes getting along all the easier. More meeting with the other interns would have been great however.
Glasgow is a very reasonably priced city and cost of living is nothing to worry about. The city centre is a short drive from the airport and is a great place to socialise whether it be eating out, music, theatre, shopping that you are interested in.
Glasgow has a very good nightlife with a good variety of bars and night clubs.
We didn't have the opportunity to get involved in many activities out of work that were staged by Enterprise however I do know that it is something the company does and given more time, in a less busy season there would certainly be opportunity to do so.
