The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed the internship. It gave me a great insight into the working of the bank as a whole and also how technology integrates in such a large firm. It was especially nice to see the plethora of projects that people are working on everyday. It shows you just how integral a part technology plays, even in a financial institution.
I felt very welcomed by my colleagues in my team. They took on board my comments and never de-valued them in any way. This allowed me to feel part of the team which was great.
My manager gave me a lot of support and guidance. It was easy to talk to them and I found that I could ask them any questions that I had and I knew they would give a comprehensible answer. They tell you that there is no stupid question to ask and that really is the case.
I felt I had the perfect balance with regards to business. I wasn't too busy on a daily basis but neither did I feel that I had nothing to do. There was always something for me to do and I felt that I had a good hold of the work I was assigned and could complete it within the time that was allocated.
I was given as much responsibility as most of the colleagues on my team. They treated me like I had been on the team longer than I had which I feel made the internship more enjoyable.
I have developed skills which I can use in my studies and beyond. Working in a real software development environment teaches you how to work well in reasonably large team which I had not had the chance to do before. I will definitely use the the networking and technical skills that I have built up over the internship in the future.
The Company
The office was more laid back than I expected which was a good surprise. I never felt too pressured in the office and I think that that makes it a more pleasurable environment to work. I felt my productivity and my team's productivity was increased in the office environment.
Rigid structure to the internship and regular communications from the team which organised it. Events that were organised for the interns were fun and allowed us to get to know each other better.
Had regular meetings with manager to discuss personal development and strengths which I felt allowed me to see how I was doing and how I should improve. This meant I could improve myself and get appraisal for it.
Company Parties/Events
Very appealing. If one does well in the internship, one is offered a graduate position for the following year.
The Culture
Yes. Regular events allowed us to get to know each other. Lunchtimes too. :P
Not bad. Definitely not as expensive as London.
Nightlife in Glasgow is always good.
Quite a few opportunities to go to events outside of work which were fun to go to. Gave a chance to network with some of the employees too.
