The Role
The placement was monotonous and the work was very 'button pushery'. It was a struggle to find enjoyment this year.
I felt valued for certain things but it was not forgotten that i was a student and there to do the work.
I was given lots of support from my supervisor in all aspects of the job, i never felt that i could not ask a question. By the end however i was made to feel that i was not really allowed to ask questions.
The work came in waves. Sometimes the work was very busy with little time left to process data etc and sometimes there would be absolutely nothing to do but sit at my desk.
I was given responsibility to process the samples and get results but i was not given responsibility to input or lead the direction of the work.
I learned more interpersonnel skills working in retail than i have this year. I will take away a few things, like time management, but mostly i pushed buttons all year.
The Company
Everyone in my office was very nice, we had a great laugh. But when it came to serious chat everyone was just scared of being made redundant. This theme echoed throughout the year.
The placement was very well organised from day one to the last day. You will have a desk assigned to you, lab coats and safety glasses and a computer to work on from day one.
There are many online training exercises to complete on your own and some group training sessions provided. The hands-on training was better than anything online.
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Throughout the year it seemed that the company was not interested in recruiting new employees and that any current employees lived in fear of redundancy. I am not sure GSK will be recruiting in the near future with all the relocations and realignments going on.
The Culture
Living next to london was very fun.
There is a sleazy club called Chicago. Definitely worth a pass, beware of the old men in the corner.
Nothing really work organised. In London you can organise your own thing.
