The Role
Overall work was challenging and interesting, however due to nature of my particular project did get bogged down for days at times just changing variable names etc.
They always gave the impression that they appreciated what I was doing, and were quick to respond to queries.
I had a very busy supervisor, so sometimes had temporary supervisors, however they were all very helpful.
Worked at my own pace, and managed to find things to do during compiles/testing etc.
Not much to be responsible for. Relied on to do my work without constant checks etc. 90% of the time things were only checked if I asked. (apart from formal reviews)
The C++ skills I've developed should be extremely useful throughout the next 3 years, as this is the main language taught on my course. The intensive coding course at the start was really helpful.
The Company
Sitting at a computer is never going to be terrifically thrilling. It wasn't particularly dull, just not riveting.
The programme has been going on for a while, and they seem to have a larger intake every year. The summer placement programme acts exactly like a truncated version of the graduate programme. Everything was pretty slick.
C++ training course was very good, improved my coding a lot. Attended a development seminar about a specific area of my work.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
Already have an offer for a summer placement next year, have been given the strong impression that a job will be here after my degree if I want it.
The Culture
Some initial social activities, but everything has been quite quiet since.
Stayed at home, however the area is very cheap, and the company provide cheap accomodation to placement students as required.
Not my thing, but I understand that there are some decent clubs etc. in central B'ham.
The company run various activities through their social fund, including a subsidised climbing club, and a walking weekend in mid-September.
