The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a good bunch of interns and the employees at the company were really friendly. One of the best things I found about M&G is the relaxed working environment.
As an intern it is difficult to know whether your work is truly helpful just because your knowledge base is so basic, but my colleagues were always very thankful for what I had done/ tried to do.
Yes definitely, but it is also important that you ask for feedback if you are unsure.
I had mainly project based work so there was always something to be getting on with.
My projects were quite independent. It felt like it was work that could be taken on board if I came up with something useful but was not integral for other people's jobs. I think this was a good work format for an intern.
I have finished my degree so it will not be helpful there, however the insight into investment management was invaluable. The difference between my knowledge of the industry now and previously is huge (although I definitely have lots more to learn)!
The Company
The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. People tend to just be getting on with their own work but they are generally happy to stop what they are doing to help if you need some help. If they are busy then they would normally just arrange a time later in the day to help. In my team people tended to get in for about 8am and leave 5.30-6pm. There was definitely no pressure to stay on for ridiculous hours (although obviously it is up to you to make sure your work is going to be done on time to the best standard possible).
I thought the internship was very well organised. There was two days of training at the beginning then you are straight into work. I liked this because I have been on another internship where the training went on for longer and it just seemed to drag. Then throughout the internship we had 'lunch and learn' sessions each week where we would have lunch with a couple of employees who would explain what their role is and how they fit into the business. This was useful and interesting. There was also a benchmarking session midway through which was basically a presentation on a topic they choose.
I would not say there was anything particularly tangible in this area, aside from we did receive feedback on our presentations which was useful. I do not really think an internship is about a firm 'investing' in you, I think it about both parties seeing if they are a good fit for each other.

I am really looking forward to starting next year.
The Culture
We had a good group of interns. There were a few things organised by M&G but we were also quite good at organising drinks for ourselves.
Beers about £4.50. Standard London prices.
Plenty of places to go nearby in City of London or elsewhere.
There were several different sports activities after work which interns were welcome to get involved with. e.g. football, softball.
