The Role
This was my first internship and I enjoyed it immensely, I felt useful and integrated by day 3, the company provided a good place to live for a reasonable fee, the pay was good and I felt it was good experience, if only everywhere was as fun to work as I found it here.
I worked in a very friendly small team of around 6 people. I am still receiving snapchats from some of my colleagues (a few weeks on now). They always invited me to the pub and made me feel welcome.
My immediate manager always had time to talk and guide me through things (especially helpful as I had very little experience with the actual Java language that I was using) and other members of the team gave helpful feedback in code reviews and comments.
My days were structured by a task list given to me by my manager. This consisted of small and large tasks, Urgent bugfixes (as it was close to release day) and also longer term goals. I felt able to organise my own time and this was something I tried to improve while I was there as it is one of my weaknesses.
I was never overmanaged and was often left free to design my own implementations for bugfixes and features, but I never felt over pressured or out of my depth.
The specific skills (java code and app packaging) will not help me in my degree, but working here also taught me a lot of things about working in a modern tech company, including the idea of agile development and working in a small team. I expect, and hope to, find a lot of these things very useful in the future.
The Company
Friendly office with no cubicles, accessible planning meetings and feeling like one of the team.
Very well set up and slick. You get the feeling they have done this for so long now that most of the issue people have they have already come across and solved.
I was never sent to training sessions but I had well set out goals (with a specific theme - so it wasn't so wide ranging as to be daunting) so learning mainly from docs was fine

The company has had a couple of slightly rough years recently apparently but they seem to be on the up and up again. Older people in the company say its very easy to move between jobs, trying new things and learning things if that is something that interests you. They seem to be hiring graduates all the time too.
The Culture
I didn't meet a lot of the interns (who weren't in my house) until a bit too late on in my internship which was a shame. It was mostly my fault for having outside commitments on days when things were happening.
It's Enfield, so I dropped some cash on an Oyster card, but company houses were reasonable and there is a Tesco.
Didn't taste too much of Enfield's delights. Pubs were good, not incredibly cheap but not too bad. And there's a night bus back from the centre of London if you want to go out properly.
Lot of lunchtime sports etc, and if the interns get mobilised lots of things can be planned through the infamous (fro spam) interns email list.
