The Role
Thoroughly enjoyed my placement experience. From day one I felt part of the team, which made settling in much easier. The social side such as Football and drinks after work also allowed me to meet different people across the business.
My colleagues would always push me to achieve and gave me duties beyond the normal boundaries of a placement student. I finished the placement last year and I am still in regular contact with the whole team.
My manager gave me the support, confidence and knowledge to achieve in the recruitment industry. The guidance my manager gave me has set me up for life and I do not believe I would be in an employable position without her.
Due to the fast moving nature of the role, there is always something to do. Whether it's calling and meeting candidates, speaking to clients or holding assessment centres, you will not be left empty handed.
You will soon start to notice how quickly you progress in the role and you will be given more and more responsibility as this happens. You will start by speaking to clients and candidates on the phone to learn about the specialism you are working in, you will then move on to conducting candidate interviews and client visits until you feel like you could manage your own desk within Hays.
You are given extensive training within Hays. You will join the Hays academy in your first week, to introduce you to the company and the directors in your region. You will then go to London to complete the Hays training programme, after which, you will feel comfortable to step into the role. Hays gave me the drive and work ethic needed to complete my final year of studies. It also gave me the core business skills to achieve in any industry.
The Company
Recruitment is a sales role; therefore the office was always lively. Nights out were always planned and the football team played every week.
The placement was structured to the speed I learnt the role. I wouldn't be pushed to do something I was uncomfortable with.
Hays paid for me to go to Birmingham and London on numerous occasions for training. I also took part in the recruitment drive for the following year.
Subsidised/Company Gym
National Travel
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
The next step for me would be a full recruitment consultant. This would be an easy step after the groundwork made in my placement year. As a placement student, you will also see the amount of money that can be made if you are successful.
The Culture
There were 6 other placement students in my office. We would often go on nights out, play football and socialise outside work.
I worked in Leeds - where I went to University. So I could live in a fairly cheap flat and still go to student nights to keep expenses down.
Leeds is always a good night out. However, being out with young professionals showed me a different side to the student nights.
I would play football every week and took part in a Spartan Race with my whole team.
