The Role
This was my second summer internship with Rolls-Royce and was design based whereas my first internship was manufacturing based. This gave a good insight into another area of Rolls-Royce. Living in Derby halls with many other interns meant there was always something to do in the evenings.
In the first few weeks of the internship I was given a desk which was far away from my team in the office and had very little work to do but after that I got a desk closer and was given some challenging and interesting projects.
While the help was there if I needed it, I was also left to complete the work by myself so I feel it was a good balance between support and allowing me to use my own initiative.
I had 4 projects throughout the placement so always had plenty of work to do.
Some of the tasks were research based and therefore I didn't feel gave me much responsibility but other tasks were needing completed by the team and therefore I was held responsible if they were not completed.
While there wasn't much work which will directly help me with my degree studies, the soft skills which I developed during the internship will always be beneficial.
The Company
The office was generally quiet and serious as most people seemed busy but if I needed help people were always willing to help.
Without having specific tasks or a desk near my team for the first few weeks it was quite unorganised but once I got my projects assigned to me it was much better.
As it was only 10 weeks there was limited training available but I did get on a gas turbine training course which was very interesting and beneficial. I also got a trip to the Isle of Wight to see another factory was very interesting
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Rolls-Royce seem very keen to keep engineers who have completed an internship with them so there is a good chance of getting a graduate offer.
The Culture
Most interns lived in Derby halls and therefore there was always something to do with the other interns
The Derby halls are quite expensive but other than that Derby is cheap.
Plenty of pubs in Derby with a few clubs but doesn't exactly have an amazing nightlife.
There are plenty of Rolls-Royce clubs available but as I was only there for 10 weeks I didn't get involved in any of the clubs and societies.
