    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very enjoyable. Very friendly office, time passed quickly. Enjoyed the challenge - was given plenty of work to get on with and plenty of opportunity to impress.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Was given a number of jobs which were a similar level to what the gradates do; was well supported by my supervisor and a number (not all) of colleagues went out of their way to have a chat, find out about me, and give me good work. Overall it left a good impression.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Was given very good support by my main supervisor (drainage supervisor who I worked for directly); my line manager was a little more hands off but still supportive and friendly when needed.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Generally, a good balance - I was rarely bored as I was integrated into numerous projects in my first week and was constantly given work for these; in my last week things got a bit slow, but that had a lot to do with the fact that I could only be given small pieces of work in last week, I suppose.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Certainly enough responsibility to be getting on with on a placement - I was given 6 technical reports to draft and a number of section drawings to undertake. I generally had at least one job ongoing at all times I which I had a good degree of resposibility

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Training received will benefit immensely; additionally time management and diplomacy skills were developed, in addition to further technical knowledge in drainage. Writing industry standard reports with industry phrasing was an eye-opener, as it is a very different art to writing university technical reports. Overall it will benefit me greatly in my career in engineering, and will provide good motivation to do well in last year at uni and get a good job to put those skills to good use.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Great atmosphere, very pleasant people to work with and many good laughs to liven up the day. Plenty of sports banter. Did strike a balance and thankfully there was time to work as well, so overall a great office to work in.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Standard I would say - basically you apply, get interviewed, get the offer, turn up and work - they put you in whatever department needs work over the summer, and try and move you around but only if you ask (onus on student I found); could be slightly better but on the whole was perfectly acceptable. And it is made clear from the start that where you work is workload dependent, so it is fair.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Plenty of training initially, and there were numerous occasions in which fellow graduates provided on the job training for me as I went along. One seminar was offered which I went to - very useful, but could have been more I hope in the future.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Er, lets say that it cannot be confirmed at this stage but the prospects are very positive!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a decent social scene, yes - lunches in town, when time allowed, were a good time.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Birmingham... is where I have always been so can't really compare it to anywhere, except I know it is cheaper than a placement in London!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is plenty of night life - although again, not my scene

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Sports day - a fantastic day out, whole of Mott MacDonald competing against one another, fantastic fun.

    3/5
