    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement, I enjoyed being at work because of the approachable but professional culture and this was great for my work motivation.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My manager and my team really valued my presence, they would trust me with high exposure work and said that I added value to the team as well as the assignments I was given to complete. Some of the original work I started is being continued after I have left and is being circulated around areas of the company.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager gave me a lot of autonomy but also ensured we were having catch up meetings. This was a perfect balance for me as it allowed me to be creative and analytic but also get advice when needed. He was also very approachable for when I needed extra help.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Some weeks were a lot busier than others but when I was less busy it gave me time to add value to my work as well as take up any extra opportunities within the business such as volunteering and exploring any business areas I was interested in.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • After a briefing, I was left to do the work by myself, throughout the time it took me to complete the tasks I was be asked about my progress but generally was left to do the work myself. When I was doing my own project, any time that my boss stepped in to help was constructive and as he had many years of experience I appreciated the help.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I feel I have learnt more about myself and the industry more in 3 months than I have in my 2 years at uni!

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I enjoyed my job and got on well with my team, the people around me and several other people in the office. I am giving a rating of 7 purely because any higher would be an unproductive working atmosphere. The great thing about the office was that it was a professional environment but there was always something fun going on. For example on Hellmann's 100th birthday there was a party with a free BBQ, when new products come out you get freebies and sometimes a themed lunch, and there are always experiences to get involved in.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Depended on how organised your manager was, mine had everything sorted for me but I know others struggled. It was quite difficult to get access to everything being a 3 month intern but this didn't have too much of an impact.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I could take learning modules and had a morning off to learn more about Unilever's P&L and Excel. Although I am not disappointed that they did not invest more because only having 12 weeks having more time off for training wouldn't have been appropriate. Where there were gaps my manager helped out and I also got the feeling that if I'd have asked for anymore training I could have easily got it.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have made it through to have an assessment centre and am really hoping for the job because I think the company has a great culture and feel if I developed that much in 3 months cannot imagine how much I would develop in the 2 year grad scheme.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We have two days of induction before the placement started - a BBQ and quiz night then a day around the office having talks. These were great opportunities to get to know each other. Also many placement students lived together so it was easy to create networks with many interns. I was based at 100ve and as there were less of us there we all stayed in touch and we generally ate lunch together a few days a week and had weekly meetings to talk about our work progress and bring along our managers to share their experiences.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lived in Clapham Junction - loved it but very expensive. The commutes to work were also quite expensive. Although on quite a generous wage, haven't really earned much over the summer, but also some of this is due to me making the most of the London lifestyle.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Worked in central London so surrounded by bars and restaurants. Was nice to go for a drink or two after work as a chance to network with different people in the company

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many. I volunteered at Dove Day - where I visited a school to try and help out with self esteem issues and I arranged my own field trip to see the way retailers stock the products
