The Role
Fantastic company with a great working atmosphere and unique culture. Everyone was friendly and welcoming, and were keen to get you involved in many different things while there to make the most out of the placement.
The team were very accommodating and friendly, and went out there way to ensure I was fitting in, felt like I'd known them for a lot longer than the few months I was there.
My manager and the other team members were very supportive, I sat only a few metres away from my manager's desk and any time I had any questions or just wanted to talk (provided they weren't too busy) I could get their attention. Setting up meetings with placement supervisor was easy and they were more than happy to talk things through or give you advice.
Varied day-to-day, some days were much more busy than others. Finance placements can be quite cyclical in nature with accounting and reporting deadlines at the end of the month.
I was given a decent amount of responsibility in helping out with treasury related activities and being trusted to get on with the work. Working in treasury meant there was a lot of dependency on this relating to bank open hours.
This placement hones in your people skills as you meet and work with quite a few different people across the finance department and other departments in the company. The actual job focussed more on your organisation, planning, time management and attention to detail. Your finance knowledge and current affairs understanding improves over the placement as the team are subject to external business environment changes, some of which are bigger talking points than others. This placement was more about finding out what you're interested and giving you the tools to follow up on them in the time you're there, and if you show enthusiasm for the company/type of work or you enjoy meeting people then this was a really good placement for developing those initiative-based skills.
The Company
Really good fun, the people there make the company what it is. Being part of the Virgin brand the core values are shared amongst the subsidiary groups like Virgin Media, where people and customers are put first above all. The team were really good fun too.
The placement was fairly well organised, they had an idea of the type of things to get you involved in to start with as a foundation to the company (building your understanding etc.), then if you communicated your interests and took the opportunities given it moulds your placement experience. Virgin Media went through a merger at the start of June 2013 so that broke up a normal schedule of work you would be expected to do. They had taken on students in previous years.
Not a huge amount of personal/training or development took place, those opportunities are reserved more for the graduate scheme (although if you wanted to get involved in any I'm sure you could). Received on-the-job training for the job and attended a few insight days but that was it.

Really good prospects, the finance graduate scheme at Virgin Media interests me alot, and from the time I spent in the company I'd be keen to apply.
The Culture
I was the only placement student from my degree there, and while there must have been other placement students there in other departments there was no interaction.
Quite a cheap area (Basingstoke/Hook), very reasonable prices. I paid £350 for rent and bills to lodge in Basingstoke, and compared to the pay from VM meant I saved a fair amount.
Not overly keen on going out in Basingstoke for a night out, but London is only 1 hour train journey away.
There probably were a few clubs to get involved in but I didn't really hear much about it. Again I'm sure if you asked around there were probably sports clubs or charity events to get involved in.
