The Role
A struggle for the first 2 weeks or so but by the end I was enjoying the work/workplace, once I had my projects up and running and was independent in getting on with them it was good.
I was the first intern ever in the department, was made to feel welcome and my work was respected and supported by most colleagues who generally made time for meeting with me in the same way as a full time worker.
I had the great position of being placed under a strong manager who gave me overall direction for my work and helped out when my head dipped, or to set me up with the right people in the business for my work to progress.
initially bored, felt like work experience, was a struggle to occupy myself. Then the final weeks were manic trying to finish my projects - the hazards of a short placement.
I was given leadership over a number of process investigations, responsible for there outcomes.
My placement wasn't like engineering at uni, no maths. It was all people skills, meetings etc. So was great for me to develop these and learn about workplace behaviors which will be very useful in the future.
The Company
Was quite a quiet department, not a bad atmosphere to work in but not much laughter.
I was only told where to report 3 days before i started - took 2 weeks to log onto a computer. the department i was in organised my work well, but there was a lot of confusion amongst all the interns with HR activities/pour communication from them throughout.
Had input from my line manager, training me on the job. HR put us on a 1/2 day course, but not much formal instruction about skills development.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Solid company with lots of opportunities to develop. Seemed more project management than engineering in my department, but i enjoyed my time there. Everyone there had the opinion that rolls royce was a great place to work and yet weren't enthusiastic day to day.
The Culture
there were lots of us summer interns living together in the uni halls (a little overpriced for what they were) which was fun to hang out in evenings together playing sport and going out.
seemed reasonably priced, not noticeably different from other parts of the country.
some good pubs, clubs less so.
lots of sports societies to join, generally though the sport/ other activities were on a casual basis set up by us interns.
