    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • My placement was really good, with JRF being a relatively small but well known organisation there is a lot of scope for you to have a big impact and make a significant impact

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at the Homestead within both the housing trust and the foundation is extremely friendly and welcoming. In no time at all I felt completely at ease with my surroundings.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was always on hand to give me advice and was extremely approachable if I had any queries related to work or anything else.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most of the time there were plenty of things for me to do. Working on a project there were natural peaks and troughs when different intensities of work were required. I can only think of a few times when I was genuinely at a loose end during my placement and even then there was always some reading for me to do.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was the only person working full time on the project even though I was assisted by many others both within and outside the organisation including my manager who was in charge overall. I felt I wasgiven a challenging degree of responsibility which I liked and had to take some decisions myself but at the same time I always thought there was support if I needed it.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Although the internship didn't relate directly to my degree there was definitely some crossover. My degree though certainly assisted in me understanding much of JRFs publications. The general transferable skills though of working to deadlines, contributing and listening at meetings, speaking in front of a large audience and using various software packages to name but a few will no doubt help me in the future.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Office was sometimes quiet with it being the summer holidays, there were other people there of a similar age either interns/former interns but as mentioned above everyone very friendly.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Absolutely fine, support from manager, IT induction and also given mentor who was former intern.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The organisation paid for me to attend various conferences and research launches both related and unrelated to the project I was working on. These were really interesting and a great way to get a wider feel of what the organisation does

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As a small organisation they do not take on that many graduates, it is conceivable that I could work for them in the future but perhaps unlikely.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were not many other placement students when I was there but we did go for drinks sometimes on Fridays after work.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • York no doubt more expensive than the likes of Hull, Bradford and above average for the North but if your a southerner you will find prices quite reasonable both in terms of pints and accommodation.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • York is certainly no Leeds or Newcastle but there is certainly enough there for you to have a decent night out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are opportunities for you to play tennis on the court the organisation owns at Homestead Park. I got to participate as part of a JRF/JRHT corporate team in the Dragon Boat on the river Ouse which was great fun and a good way of getting to know people within the organisation.

    4/5
