The Role
The only times that I didn't enjoy were those when I was very short of work to do. However, these weren't very often.
It was definitely a good place to work.
My manager was always very helpful when I had a question.
It varied. Some days were very busy and others not. But as it was such a large office with different disciplines working together, I would go and seek more work if I had ran out, usually without a problem.
Most tasks didn't involve a lot of responsibility. For example, I would be asked to draw out someone's design instead of having an input into the design. However some of what I did contributed towards a design. An example would be some calculations of electrical loads.
Although I would have liked more design experience, I think I picked up lots of skills that come with spending some time at a large engineering company. These I can carry through into things such as university design projects and organizing my time and studies.
The Company
It was a friendly environment.
Because of the nature of the work my team carried out, with regular deadlines etc., my manager wasn't really able to give me a large piece of work that would last me a few weeks. I've heard from other people who had internships at other companies that they had a large project for themselves to work on throughout their internship. Instead, I was given many small tasks which varied in length from 30 mins to a week.
I was often invited to CAD tutorials by my manager which I went to to pick up some CAD skills.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
As they're a huge design consultancy, there are many industries to choose from. You're bound to find one for you.
The Culture
The office had lots of graduate/apprentices working there, which was really good as a placement student.
Stayed at home while I was there so I'm not sure on the cost of living. I think the pubs/bars charged fairly standard prices.
Haven't been out in York before.
There were regular do's to go to for things like people retiring. There was also a day at the races for the office which I couldn't attend. In terms of sports etc., I didn't hear of any while I was there.
