The Role
It was a very enjoyable placement where I picked up a lot of useful skills such as good time management, working effectively under pressure and good presenting skills. It was also a very difficult internship because my team and I wanted to produce a unique concept idea, which was not a simple task.
I got on well with everyone I worked with. There was good, effective communication and everybody listened to one another's ideas. I believe this was one of the main factors that enabled my team and I to produce a brilliant concept for Sky.
The brief we were given by the company was very straightforward, and the aim of this was to get the team thinking on their own about a good conceot. So therefore, this was a team project, that had minimal supervision and help from management.
Everyday I was kept busy with work, and under constant pressure to meet my deadlines. However, I was never bored, which made the internship quite enjoyable for me.
All the members of my team were given plenty of responsibility. We each had different sections of the concept that we worked on. Therefore we all had to make sure that our sections were complete before the final ptch to the directors of Sky Sports.
Before the internship I was a very shy, un-confident individual, but after after the placement I became much more outspoken and I learned to network in the business. This has helped me land multiple internships at other high profile companies. I have also developed my research and design skills, which always come in handy when working in print Journalism, which is what I do now.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was pleasant because everybody was friendly and helpful.
The internship was very organised, we had specific times for meetings and catch-up sessions with the team leaders and project managers. We had to always ensure that we were punctual and prepared.
There was no personal training, this placement was more about working as a team and coming up with a concept together. The most the company did for me was offer me advise on how to boost my profile in the media industry, and get a job.
Financial Bonus
As much as I would love to go back to Sky, I don't think they hire many Journalism graduates. To get a placement there is hard enough, so I don't believe there are many employment prospects there just yet.
The Culture
I got to meet a bunch of other students who were on placement there also, and I still keep in touch with them to this day. So I would definately agree that there was a good social scene at Sky.
The cost of eating out was quite expensive, because all the local bars and pub prices are quite high. As for the cost of living, it did not affect me because I was living from home at the time.
I did not check out the nightlife in the area I worked.
Not that I was aware of.
