The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement at PSA. It provided me experience in different ways of working in different departments, individually and as a part of specific teams. My roles were varied throughout my time and I was lucky enough to draw from the experience of different managers in different departments which was useful to see different management styles in action. I was given lots of opportunities to get involved with different projects and operations which has exposed me to lots of new ideas. The company is friendly and helpful caring about what it can offer you as part of the experience.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. I was often asked by the staff to contribute and aid in projects that I wasn't often involved in because they wanted my opinion, a fresh set of eyes. My opinion was always valued and my IT skills were used in particular to help streamline operations.
My managers and supervisors were always there on hand to offer support, advice and guidance, but at the same time allowed me enough space to develop and grow, using my own initiative.
Day to day workload varied depending on departments. If I had my own projects I had to be be self motivated and drive these projects forward. Within some departments I had day to day tasks to complete whilst completing projects on top of this, so it could be quite busy at times, but the workload was definitely manageable.
I was given large amounts of responsibility whilst on my placement, being given projects that I had complete control over and needed to make happen. I was also given the responsibility of working on high priority and urgent cases, which needed to be dealt with swiftly and effectively. If they were not dealt with correctly this would impact on the company negatively. This helped build my confidence and form trust with my colleagues and the company.
The skills I have developed and utilised whilst on my placement will definitely help me within my studies and beyond. I have been able to see theory in practice to see how it works or doesn't work in the real world. This experience has been invaluable working with different people, learning how to approach different scenarios to get the best outcome. Ultimately these experience will help me in the future as I can draw on what I have learnt during my time at PSA.
The Company
The atmosphere, was friendly and productive, nothing was ever too much trouble.
The work placement was set up well being given experience in 4 different areas, which all gave you different insights into how the the business functioned.
I was given training in different areas of the business, and exposed to processes and methodologies adopted by the company. This has helped develop my knowledge and skill base especially in the areas of lean working.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Future prospects for working within this organisation are very appealing. I have been offered a conditional place on the graduate scheme pending my university results next year. I would not hesitate in considering a career opportunity with PSA. condition
The Culture
There were social events organised with the fellow placement and graduate students which were always good to get involved in.
The cost of living in the Coventry area is not too expensive in comparison to the rest of the country and the cost of socialising was relatively cheap.
The nightlife in the area I worked was not too bad. If you ever got fed up going out in Coventry then there was always Leamington, Warwick and Birmingham which were all good fun
There were lots of opportunites to get involved in things outside of work such as sports events, socials, charity fund raisers, away days, major entertainment events such as Goodwood Festival etc.
