About You
The graduate recruitment team worked really hard to run a full and exciting internship. There were quite a few socials and the talks were dispersed throughout the three weeks so that they weren't jammed into the very beginning. We also had one of the best introductory days I've ever had at a firm, we had to essentially play a board game as an ice breaker. No health and safety videos in sight!
Sometimes I was caught up doing quite menial tasks but that is to be expected. At points I had been given tasks and then effectively abandoned by a far too busy supervisor.
The firm did have several excellent talks and when the supervisors could spare the time they gave us a rundown of what they were working on. For instance Cristopher Stoakes who writes All You Need to Know About the City gave two talks during our time there.
We were given talks on commerce and law in practice. There were excellent introductions to the legal practice in general and these would be of great assistance when starting as a trainee. If you were doing commercial subjects these would also be helpful in the final year of a law course
The Company
A highly organised event, which stuck to the schedule that was given on the first day.
The firm tried really hard to get us involved. For some reason I just felt as if the group did not bond as much as I would have expected. But that may just have been a particular quirk from our scheme.
We were told in the beginning that all of us could have been employees so there was a real commitment to train us however much that was possible.
We were present throughout the good times and got a feel for the stress and the fun that the trainees have to go through.
As we were there for three weeks we had an excellent chance to meet lawyers and get involved. Obviously, on a summer scheme you get a far glitzier experience than a real lawyer so you have to keep that in mind.
Invaluable insight into the firm, it's always relieving to know that a firm lives up to its reputation from the outside.
Everything Else
We were paid 300 pounds a week.
We were allocated a buddy that met us periodically throughout the scheme and whom was invited to the social events. In addition we had a short chance to meet the partners during he fancier events such as the end of scheme party and at the Ivy.
The lawyers were very keen to hang out with us. One night we spent several hours just having drinks with a partner that kept us entertained throughout the evening.
We were given a talk about the societies the firm has and the CSR opportunities.
Definitely.
