About You
I was given real work from the get-go; gaining valuable hands-on experience and feeling that this was beneficial not only for my CV, but personally as well.
I was not given tasks just to keep me occupied and out of the way. People, from the partners to paralegals, gave me tasks suitable for my level so that I felt I was actually contributing to the firm, whilst developing my own skills at the same time.
Whilst I was given tasks to do and allowed to get on with them, everyone passing by would stop to talk and make sure I was coping well. Most of the time I was working alongside a senior member of the firm. I felt comfortable enough to ask if I needed any help or was unsure.
Not so much for my degree, but I definitely believe that it has helped make me realise what I need to develop, and how I can improve, my CV and personal skills in order to get a training contract.
The Company
It was difficult for the insight to be very structured as the tasks I was given depended upon whether something urgent arose and what other activities I was doing at the time were. It was not a rigidly scheduled insight where every hour was mapped out in advance, but I felt that this is probably what it is like actually working in a law firm.
It is a law firm so naturally it was not all fun and games. However the people were relaxed and amicable, and I felt comfortable during my time there. I was pleasantly surprised how people would always be happy to talk and, whilst working hard, would take the time out to make sure I was okay.
Considering I was given tasks to suit the level of skills I had, there was not much need for personal training or development. However, people were keen to show me, in a friendly manner, what I can improve or develop to improve future career chances.
Whilst I was given some tasks to do during the morning, I would be given activities when they arose during the day and somebody would want assistance, very much how I imagine a trainee works.
My insight took part in one department, however I was shown around the firm and the layout of the floor meant that I would meet people from other departments. I worked with a variety of different people within the department, from trainees to partners.
It helped me realise that the practical, hands on side of law is very interesting and something which I really enjoy.
Everything Else
I only worked in one department, however I met and talked with everyone within it. Further, I was shown around the firm and would regularly pass by people who would stop and talk.
Naturally some people are very busy, however, for the most part, people were happy to talk.
Many people were discussing the various activities that had recently happened, and those that were upcoming.
