The Role
Overall, it was a rewarding experience to be allowed to work in an office alongside established engineers. However, there was many downfalls to this experience including lack of organisation and work arranged for summer interns, lack of support and personal interaction for students.
Very rarely did I feel like I was allowed to do any work that was of any great value to my colleagues at the company. Most of the time I felt that I was getting in their way and frustrating them by endlessly asking for work to do.
Very little. If there was specific questions I had there was a few people that I could approach (mostly out of necessity rather than because they were approachable). Everyone seems so busy and involved in their work that to receive any support or guidance from anyone (especially the senior engineers) was almost a burden for them. The most support and guidance I received in the three months at the office was from two graduate engineers who themselves only just joined the company.
Majority of the time, I was not busy at all. And the work that I was given often had little to do with engineering and far lower than the level of work I could have done for the company. I've spent a lot of my time going round asking different people for ANY work they needed help with and mostly only getting little bits to finish off that last 20mins and I was back to doing nothing.
Very little.
There was no guidance provided for the duration of the placement. On my first day, I felt like their didn't know what to do with me and this feeling continued for the rest of the placement. It's a massive shame as the company could provide students with very valuable experience as they have interesting and big projects but the lack of organisation and effort led to a almost waste of time experience for me. That is probably mostly a reflection on the office and the team I was placed with, rather than the company itself.
The Company
Very dull. I have never worked in an office which is as dull and anti social as this one. Even though there is an open space plan office, no one ever speaks to each other and all communication is done via email even though there are sitting meters away from each other.
I felt that the team i was placed with had no idea what to do with me and what work to give me. At the end of my first day there, I was already frustrated with the lack of work and this feeling continued for the duration of the placement.
I felt there was no investment in my personal training and development. None at all. Most of the time I wasn't sure whether anyone even knew I was in the office or not.
No chance for working in the same office. I would reluctantly consider working for the organisation at a different office
The Culture
No social scene at all. And for the three months I was there, i did not meet any other summer interns even though I was told there was a number of them working at the same time. This just goes back to the lack of guidance and support.
The area of the office is close to Manchester city centre so socializing ect is not too bad.
Manchesters nightlife is very good.
I heard of none apart from occasional sporting events which are of no interesting to most of the female colleagues.
