    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year, the whole office was warm and welcoming and I was given plenty of responsibility. The role could be intense at times, but I feel this added to my experience and will make future roles less daunting. There was a really strong community in my office which made working at Hays enjoyable, a number of social events would also occur regularly which was comforting when you are a placement student in a city you aren't familiar with.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt my colleagues put a lot of trust in me, I was treated as a proper member of the team, not just as a placement student. I was given a lot of responsibility and often asked to cover other peoples work when they were away on holiday, which made me feel as if I was a trusted & valued member of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At the beginning of my placement it was difficult to be given a lot of support as the desk I was allocated to was so busy, however, despite this if I ever felt like I was stuck or needed advice both my supervisor and my manager were there to answer a question or help me in difficult situations. The training schemes offered by Hays were also very beneficial.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • No day at Hays is the same, and they all go extremely quick as you are constantly on the go. I feel, for me, this was the perfect environment as I enjoy being busy. It can however be fairly stressful when you are given a lot of responsibility, but I think this is something I will benefit from in the future, I would also prefer this to a job where I was sat staring at the ceiling.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted with a fair amount of responsibility, my managers never thought twice about leaving me to cover work when they weren't there, but they were still mindful that they didn't give me too much to handle. My supervisor would also let me run a workshop with one client alone, and also let me have the majority of the responsibility of one account. I feel I was given a lot of responsibility because I was trusted, I was also very well supported and mentored if I felt I was in above my head, by both my supervisor and manager.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learnt a massive amount at Hays. I developed strong communication skills and the ability to adapt these between clients and candidates. I learnt a multitude of things about different business' and their recruitment methods. I also developed strong interviewing skills and judgement of character and most importantly how to hold yourself up in the business world. These are all things adaptable in the working world, I feel they will give me a massive step ahead when working within another business opposed to someone who hasn't done a placement year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Absolutely loved my office. Everyone was so welcoming and really good fun, made some really good friends. Often had fancy dress days and team nights out.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I find this difficult to judge as at the time that I obtained my placement there were a lot of business changes which meant things were held up, however from what I've seen this year the process is so much more seamless and well organised. Although you aren't really given a development plan or set tasks for the placement, you get the opportunity to make it what you want which I think allows you to gain more experience.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was sent on exactly the same training courses as any consultants that joined the business, which I was really surprised about, and really appreciated. I was also included in any top up training throughout my placement.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Financial Bonus

    Above 25 days holiday
