The Role
Working for Disney was for me a wonderful experience. At no point did I feel like 'just an intern' the work I was given was of a similar nature and standard to those who were qualified around me, and the entire year I was made to feel like a valued member of the team.
I feel like myself and the other intern were very much valued by the entire team and were often asked questions or asked for help from more experienced colleagues. My boss and Supervisor were very supportive and helpful when I needed it and allowed and trusted me to get the work done correctly and to a high standard.
My supervisor was incredibly helpful and always there if I needed help. He also made sure to show me new things all the time even if they were not directly relevant to what I was doing, just so I could get the most out of my experience. My manager also made sure to let us know he was there if we needed him and would often help us out.
To begin with I felt like my job was not taxing enough and often I would have whole afternoons with nothing to do. However, as the year progressed and I learnt more and more, I was given extra responsibility and jobs so towards the end I was never without anything to do. I believe this was much better then having nothing to do.
I felt like I was given a hugs amount of responsibility as myself and another intern were solely in charge of one region of accounts. We were also the main payment makers for things such as tax, salaries and expenses.
While the skills I learnt, probably will not help me with my studies as such, they will definitely help for later in life as I learnt to use Excel to a high standard and became familiar with SAP.
The Company
Due to the nature of the work I undertook, in general the office was quiet as people were concentrating on their work. However, the floors were decorated with everything Disney and there was no shortage of conversations and fun etc when appropriate.
At first as I was unsure as I was not added to the intern facebook group so I was left to find my own accommodation etc and did not have a chance to socialise with other interns before I started. However, once I had started it seemed to flow pretty well and I experienced no further problems.
The company offered a wide variety of free courses that we were welcome to partake in, such as excel skills etc this was beneficial, however, if we wanted to take any of the paid courses we would have to fund these ourselves.
Subsidised Canteen
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Healthcare/Dental
While Disney do not have a graduate scheme as such the managers made it very clear that if you make a good impression they will remember you in the future. The majority on my office was made up of old interns who had come back to disney.
The Culture
As a whole the interns did not tend to meet up too much, however, as there were 10 interns in our office we would often go for meals or drinks after work together etc. In the summer when we could leave at 3 often the whole office would go for drinks after work including managers. there were also a couple of company funded after work events which were extremely fun.
living in London is not cheap and as I was looking to save money this year and pay off my overdraft I did not go out much, however, I made the most of the free activities big cities have to offer.
Hammersmith is a busy working district so while there are no clubs as such there are many pubs and restaurants that are full of after work drinkers. The atmosphere is always busy and lively and there are no shortage of places to go out clubbing just a short walk from Hammersmith
There were activities offered to us such as a work football league and netball league, There were also volunteering activities we could undertake around the community.
