The Role
A great year, thoroughly enjoyed living in London and working for such a prestigious company. Sadly my experience was dampened by office politics and poor management - something my replacement interns are currently dealing with.
Some of the team were fantastic and I'd regard them as fantastic contacts and friends for life. The more important members of my team weren't particularly kind to me.
Poor management as discussed previously, which is a shame because everything else was fantastic.
My intern partner quit due to a discrepancy with the management so I had to do the workload of two people. That was fine, however I strived to do more creative work - so adding that on top meant a dangerously high workload.
Plenty of responsibility - felt like I went beyond the call of duty creating adverts (and in some cases voicing them too) and working on FCP 7 on various projects given to me by other team members.
The placement completely made my degree. I owe it everything - the skills I've learned, the professionalism, time keeping. University can't teach you that as well as a placement can.
The Company
It was a particularly tense atmosphere on a daily basis because of the poor management - other members of the team noticed this and therefore that increased the awkward atmosphere.
Again it wasn't particularly well thought through but I'm still appreciative of it. It was 100% admin when I was informed it would be a creative role - however I often went beyond my remit and produced creative work for all sorts of teams throughout the building, which I enjoyed immensely.
A significant amount - so much so that when it came to me leaving, I was the only person in the office who knew the infrastructure of a new bit of software they'd recently introduced.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I'd happily work for Disney again - however not as an intern and definitely not doing what I did last year.
The Culture
The social element kept me going, that needs to be encouraged for student going into future placements. The interns were fantastic and we all still keep in touch today.
Roughly £550 for rent and bills per month. £100 for travel. Socialising would often be £30 a pop. In the end I was usually left with £200 to stick in my savings a month - not bad!
In the area I worked particularly (Chiswick) the nightlife was non existent. However London as a place is magical with a diverse, vibrant nightlife, I truly loved it and can't wait to go back!
Nothing particularly that the work afforded you to - you made your own activities, whether it be sports, socialising etc.
