The Role
Really good year and my BEng and Masters have both benefited from the experience
- Could always ask questions - Always a friendly face or smile - Was given work that was actually going to client and being built
- Managers and supervisors are also Project Directors and Project Managers at Mott MacDonald or even directors of the department. Although they are extremely busy they always try to ensure that you are okay and trying to get you work with experience.
- it depended on deadlines some days would be busier than others which is to be expected. However going through your placement you learn how to balance work and be more productive.
It was balanced, there were some roles I had to take the initiative and work very responsibly and for others I was in a team learning and training. Thats the great thing at Mott MaDonald its a broad experience.
- Organisation - Responsibility - Checking work - Communicating in a team -Presentation of work - Having some sense of the colloquial terms used within the industry - working independently - Quick thinking - Being able to tackle new challenges with speed and being able to interchange between task and projects The skills you learn on placement are not only beneficial for your degree; a placement gives the opportunity to to learn before starting work properly. This gives you hindsight into the business, to get involved in various different projects and also to understand the life of in my case civil engineering. if you can do a placement.
The Company
I placed right in the middle as this was Mott MacDonald. We worked hard which is to be expected as designing infrastructure, we take the responsibility to ensure it is safe to a high level. However this did not mean after work, christmas or summer there was not fun days as an office. Its al about wanting a balance of not only having fun at work but also getting the job/ task done.
My placement was overall organised well as I as placed on certain projects to gain experience whilst having the freedom of working on other task I wished to also.
In Mott MacDonald you have speakers/ presentations every week. Then there are webinars, personal development courses and task training. Subsequently Mott MacDonald will also send you to site and out of office development training. I think they believe strongly in each members development as the more you learn or know creates a stronger team within the company swell.

Really good
The Culture
You have graduate professional training where you get to meet all the graduates in the area working for Mott MacDonald. Furthermore as I said there is always something going on after work if you choose to get involved.
As Mott MacDonald is located in London is it fairly more expensive relative to the rest of England. However relative to London its in a area which isn't as expensive to central so therefore it was affordable to buy lunch everyday or go out afterwork.
Croydon therefore fairly central and good places around
-Football - Tennis - Gym -Trips abroad - Art classes etc if you wanted a club there would be either one to join or you had the opportunity to set one up :-)
