The Role
I loved this placement, the work was varied and most people were very supportive. I would consider doing this job permanently.
I got a lot of support from management when I was off sick and had regular meetings with management to discuss my progress on placement.
I was mostly busy all the time, never too much work though a few hairy moments! There were occasional weeks where no new work had come into the department and I found myself a bit bored with not enough work to do.
I think I was given a lot of responsibility and allowed to contribute wherever I could. I was often allowed to present work I had contributed to in meetings and was able to manage my own workload without someone constantly looking over my shoulder.
I think this placement will make my final year at uni so much easier than it would have been and I have hugely improved my knowledge and understanding of my subject. Tbis placement has definitely prepared me for future employment.
The Company
Due to events in the company the atmosphere was a little subdued at times, but when the whole department was in the atmosphere was fun and supportive and enthusiastic about the work they do.
This was not part of my course so the organisation was a little different from a normal placement but most things that needed to be organised before I began the placement seemed to have been organised for me.
I was not able to attend as many training courses I would have like but this was more a geographical and transport issue. People in my department and other departments always seemed happy to spend time explaining things to me when I asked and I was able to attend a few in-house training courses.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
There is no graduate scheme for my particular role so jobs are only available if someone in the department leaves and a successful application would depend on the level of experience they required.
The Culture
There was a very busy social scene among the placement students.
Accommodation was quite expensive - nearly half my wages each month!
I didn't have any first hand experience of the nightlife but the other students seemed to enjoy themselves, although I don't think the quality of the venues was especially good.
There were a few, and there are efforts on site to improve this.
