The Role
The responsibility of having my own project at a place like Cancer Research UK was brilliant. Everyone was so nice, supportive and encouraging. There was a real social side to things with the other interns also.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. Everyone was so appreciative, supportive and encouraging of my work. They got me involved in numerous meetings and always asked my opinion and took what I had to say on board.
My manager was extremely busy as she headed up quite a large team, however she always found time for me when I needed her. She would always stop and see how I was doing and was there for advice and guidance on who the right person to talk to was, or to help me if I was a bit stuck. The internship manager is fantastic too - always there for anything if you need her!
I had quite a good balance. Some days were really busy with lots of meetings and getting work done for a deadline, but for the majority of the time we all managed to finish on time and get what we needed to do, done!
I had the responsibility of my very own project during my time at CRUK. This meant that it was my own responsibility to get the work done and arrange things for myself.
I feel that I have gained skills that will definitely help me in life, not only professionally but personally too. My confidence has increased a lot, my organisational skills have improved and generally, I know I can fit in and find my place in an organisation!
The Company
There always seemed to be something going on. Whether it was birthdays, fundraising activities or just general cake lying around!
The internship was extremely well organised from beginning to end. We had two brilliant induction days where we had different speakers from all areas of the charity and from then on I knew it was going to be a good experience!
They focus a lot on personal development which is great. From the beginning the focus was on what we wanted to get out of the internship. They allowed us to shadow various departments if we wanted, building up on key skills we wanted to improve on.

I would LOVE to carry on and work for CRUK. The staff here have been really encouraging and I have stayed on as a volunteer in another department. I am just waiting for the right job to come up.....
The Culture
Yes! Every Friday we had drinks after work (and sometimes mid-week too). Everyday we had lunch together and we became like a little (well, large) family. The majority of us were friends with eachother which was great. It meant you were never too far away from someone you could go to for anything or getting people to help with your project! We organised a few big nights out which were great. It is definitely sad not seeing the rest of the interns everyday!
Well it is Islington in London so it isn't the cheapest of places to live or to go out in. It wasn't ridiculous but if you are coming straight from university not in London then you might be a bit shocked! There are plenty of cheaper places to eat and drink though, you just need to find them!
Brilliant! Islington has great pubs, clubs etc. You are only a stones throw from the rest of London though so there is definitely something there for everyone!
Yes! As it is a charity they are always looking for people to fundraise for them. I ran a intern fundraising event which raised the charity over £4000, which not only helps them, it taught me some skills I would not have had if I only stuck to my role. You could get involved with lots of volunteering at events etc.
