The Role
The role itself I didn't find particularly challenging, but once I brought this to my managers attention they were happy to give me more work with other members of the team. The community work (called GiveBack) I did had a massive impact on my year, as I thoroughly enjoyed all the volunteering I did and it is the area I felt helped improve my skills the most.
I have made some very good friends with some of the colleagues I worked with, some interns and some not. And I keep in touch with them now. My Personal Development Manger was fantastic, I couldn't have asked for anyone better - she was extremely supportive throughout my year and we are still in touch now. My Task Manager wasn't that interested, but that wasn't personal to me, she treated her whole team the same.
My Personal Developement Manager was amazing! She helped me through both my professional and my personal difficulties in my time away - she really helped me to mature and become the person I wanted to develop into.
My actual role I often didn't find challenging, and so I filled my time with volunteer work which kept me entertained and busy. Some days I didn't have time to think if there was a tool deployment in action, however some days I would be tapping my fingers waiting for the work to arrive.
The role itself gave me responsibility of ensuring compliance and adhering to the data protection act and internal security procedures My volunteer work gave me lots of responsibility as I was team leader for a couple of activities.
Even though I struggled with some parts of my placement, I would consider it one of the best years of my life as it gave me the opportunity to branch out and fully depend on myself. I was so far out of my comfort zone I couldn't reach it, but that has meant I have become more self-understanding and I now know more what I am capable of.
The Company
Everyone was a lot more relaxed when certain mangers weren't around - but I think that's the same everywhere! Especially working in a sales environment, you could certainly feel the heat.
I wouldn't say it was seamless, but the support Foundation, the area of IBM that runs the placement scheme, is fantastic. They provide training sessions and time where you can network and build your skills. They're a support network if you need someone to talk to, too.
The provided numerous opportunites to develop my professional brand, including social media e.g. LinkedIn. The offered opportunities to practice being in an assessment centre environment, assistance with graduate applications, and even if you decided you didn't want to go back to IBM they will still help you as best they can to build the skills you need to help to you go where you want to go.

I have applied for a Gradaute Position and I would love to go back, as their management structure and potential for my career development is really interesting to me.
The Culture
All the placement students gathered on the inductions weeks and everyone got to know each other through lunchtimes and out of work activities e.g. sports, parties, etc.
Being in Portsmouth I found it a lot more expensive than living in Huddersfield!
It was okay - not as good as a large city centre but there are plenty of places to go with a mix of music tastes. And they have student nights on a Friday night, too!
Lots of volunteering offered through 'giveback' which you could do inside or outside of work.
