The Role
It was a great experience, you learn what working life is all about. The experience is what you make it. So you could work hard if you want to or you could just do what you're told. There are times of heavy work load and times of lighter work load. It gets boring at times but its a job at the end of the day.
You're on the payroll so you're going to have a role, people are nice, just make a little effort to talk to them.
Wherever you needed help its going to be provided, at the end of the day the company wants to get things done if you need help to get it done they will point you in the right direction. You have quite a bit of independence in this role so once you find a contact that can help you, you contact them and help yourself.
Theres always something to do, at certain times things get busier than normal, certain projects require more time. This role will help you learn to balance your time and prioritize tasks.
You can get roles with responsibility depending on your team and the projects you are working on. If you feel you have the skills, ask and volunteer yourself.
I gained invaluable work experience - I learnt what working life in IT is really like, I didnt necessary learn new academic skills but developed on soft skills, and as this is a business you are working for I feel I learnt a lot of business and communication skills.
The Company
There were times of difficulties and change due to the recession. However this is a large organization and they know how to deal with such situations. People were adapting to change, different people coped differently.
It was well organized, there was support available from all angles.
The first couple of weeks was all about training, you get certificates for all the training you complete, the training varies from using email and company policy to developing skills required to use specialized software.
Subsidised/Company Gym
Its a standard job, its better than most as its with a large company, once your a perminant employee there are more job perks as well.
The Culture
That's one of the best things about this placement, you get to experience the working life with other students in the same boat as you. This made the entire experience much more enjoyable as you can relate to the other students very easily.
Its obviously a good area as this is a large organization, the cost of living in the area isnt particularly expensive
There's things.
You can get active and organize whatever you want with other people, from go-karting and dinner to charity work.
