    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a good job, nice place to work and very friendly colleagues.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • We got on pretty well, it was a small office so I knew everyone. We baked for eachother now and then. The Christmas party was a highlight!

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was mostly left to my own devices on projects. Support was very good, but it was more by request.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was always work do, but for project work with deadlines coming up, the work load was fairly light.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Much like the amount of work, responsibility was something that I had to seek out.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I got a lot of programming practice. I also did some graphics work, which should be useful for a graphics module I'm doing in my final year.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Professional atmosphere. I never felt like I couldn't chat to people though.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I don't have much to compare my placement to, but some things didn't feel very well thought out. I was hired as a contractor which meant I couldn't access some material on the intranet. Furthermore, contractors were not eligible for company perks. The job description I applied for wasn't accurate. My managers left managing me to the Senior Software Developer I worked with. This may have worked better, but it wasn't exactly his job. There wasn't any formal training, again this was left to my colleague (although he did a good job I would have liked to experience formal training just for the experience).

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I didn't feel like a lot was invested in me. The role was a support role for the software team. I learnt a lot and it was a useful experience but it didn't pan out as I imagined it would.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It would be quite appealing, but I'd probably like to try something different.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were a lot of people on the graduate scheme about my age, I also knew a couple of interns that I got on with very well. One intern was from the same University as me and we are still good friends.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area was Crawley, so fairly expensive (South of England prices).

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It wasn't great, there was only one nightclub for a while. A second one opened during the year, but having been used to living in a University town, it seemed there were less people my age in Crawley.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Organised by work? Just the Christmas party.

    3/5
