The Role
My work placement in AgustaWestland has been very enjoyable. It's the perfect placement for someone that loves aviation and in particular helicopters. My office faced the runway so I got incredible views all day long.
My colleagues treated me as if I was a fully qualified engineer and therefore they expected me to behave as such.
My manager made very clear what he expected from me and he made sure someone in the team helped me with technical issues or areas of the work I wasn't very familiar with.
During my placement I have been writing my final year thesis and therefore it was my own responsability to produce a good piece of research work. However, I had to meet deadlines for presentations and reports since my thesis contributed to a project the company was involved in.
I was in charge of leading a research activity for the company. At the end of my placement I had to present it to members of the European Comission.
I have vastly improved my communication skills and teamwork. Technically I'm more familiar with C++ programming language and I have also improved my Matlab skills.
The Company
Calm and relaxed. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Don't forget to buy cakes for the office if it's your birthday :)
It was very well organised with varius review meetings to make sure everything was going according to plan.
During my placement AgustaWestland enrolled all the undergraduates in a course "Presenting a Positive Professional Image' during which we had the opportunity to improve our image as young professionals and our communication skills.

The future employment prospects within the company are very appealing. I will apply to the graduate programme when I graduate.
The Culture
There were 11 undergraduates in total during my time in the company. We usually met for lunch in the cateen or after work to go bowling or even gliding at the weekends.
I found rent to be cheaper in Somerset than when I was at university in Glasgow. All the cafespubs in the town centre are reasonably priced.
Yeovil is a small town and therefore nightlife is very limited.
During my placement I bacame a STEM ambassador and participated in the Flying Start Challange. You can also join one of the company's sports team.
