The Role
I was thrown into work from the first day, the people and environment at Volkswagen were essential to making my year so enjoyable. There were stressful times but that's part of the job. It was an amazing year I wish I could do it all over again!
You become part of the team, people depend on you. I felt like I had a family at work, we were friends not just colleagues. There were times when I was stressed and all I had to do was take a quick break from work and talk to a friend and my day would be ok.
My manger was amazing, he always had my best interests in mind. Having a good manager is important you need someone to be looking out for you and I felt like I could tell him anything and he actually cared.
My job change throughout the year which meant there were times when I had more work to do in a day than I could get done. However there were quiet times too. It's about balance. I felt valued that I was given extra work even if I had to work even harder
From the get got I had a huge amount of responsibility which was scary but amazing. Your really part of the team your work is extremely important. My first month I was trusted with work involving millions out pounds.
Things you learn at university never compare to the real world. My placement taught me so much about finance. I learnt a lot I can carry forward with me from excel stills, financial understanding, communication skills and just staying open minded when it comes to working with new people.
The Company
I worked in the finance department which means constant deadlines and work so the atmosphere wasn't always as easy going as other departments but everyone tried to have fun and stay motivated. There were a few pranks from time to time.
As there has been undergrads for years it all went very smoothly and was set up well.
Volkswagen is very committed to training their staff. You are allowed 6 training programs over the year. Mine included advanced excel training, project management, presentation skills and an introduction to finance course.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Car
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Working from home
I would love yo work for Volkswagen again. I will be applying for the graduate scheme. It's an amazing company and had a great culture.
The Culture
As there are so many placement students at Volkswagen you end up with a community of friends. We made sure to go out and have fun.
As Milton Keynes has no students it's not as cheap as you'd want. However the accommodation was such a good price for what you got. The houses and flats are amazing! You won't want to go back to student houses again.
There aren't many clubs in Milton Keynes however you still can have fun. There are a few places work checking out.
We created a social committee to try and get more activities going on which meant there was some fun days. It's hard though as everyone has families and commitments. However if people want to get involved they do. The undergrads help with encouraging people to have some fun.
