The Role
Really enjoyable placement. Was given an interesting project to complete, and it was a pleasure to go to work each day. Everyone was really nice and supportive.
Everybody was very helpful, and people were very interested in how I was getting on and what I was doing. Even members of higher management would ask me if I was enjoying my placement, and would mention how valuable my project would be.
Was given guidance on what the end product should be, but wasn't given much guidance on how to complete it. This was the point of the project though, and it was good because it allowed me to work on my own ideas for solutions.
Was able to set my own work day, so during parts of my project I needed to work intensely and during others I could relax slightly more. I was never under much pressure from anybody but myself.
Was given full access to the facilities, and could do my own thing in terms of developing my project. However, my project was quite isolated from the main areas of the business so I wasn't able to have much impact on that.
I developed professional skills such as communication, working with others and dealing with managers. I also gained technical programming and practical skills. Really, really valuable experience for me.
The Company
Was alone in an office on my own for most of the time. When there were two others in there, there was quite a fun atmosphere. However, this was quite good because I could get along with my work uninterupted.
HR was awful. Had to call the company after they didn't get back to me following my final interview. Was laughed at by an HR rep when I called to check how much holiday allowance I would receive, despite actually being allowed over 7 days. Took literally months to get in contact with the internship organiser to check what hours I would be working. Once I actually got there on day one everything was well organised, it's just the outsourced HR which is awful. Nearly a month later I still haven't received my certificate.
No particular training. However, I did pick up a lot by myself on the job. I think I was successful in the interview because I already had most of the skills required for the project.
Will be fast tracked to final round interview if I apply for a graduate job with them. Anyone that is awarded the top 'Outstanding' grade in the end of placement review will also be offered this.
The Culture
Reasonable but only because we organised it ourselves. There wasn't much assistance from the company, aside from a lunch with management at the end of the placement.
Telford is reasonably cheap, and there was no problem there. When we did go out and socialise then money wasn't the issue.
Very little decent nightlife in Telford, but further afield in Shrewsbury was fine! Needed to travel but not much of an issue.
No activities outside of work provided by the company, or if they were then I wasn't made aware of them.
