The Role
The summer internship was great and I highly recommend this programme to anyone interested in asset management or the 'buy side' of finance. The work was challenging but rewarding and the whole experience helped cement my interest in asset management.
The team were incredibly welcoming and helpful throughout my internship. They gave me real work to do, gave genuine honest feedback and never left me out of work or social events.
The support and guidance at BlackRock is great. The summer internship programme saw each intern assigned a buddy within their team who helped provide direction and help on day to day work. A mentor from an external team gave an insight into another part of the firm. Whilst managers provided regular feedback on work related performance.
On a daily basis I was busy but that was because I took on a lot of work and responsibility so that I would be able to get as much out of the internship as possible. The outcome of the internship and experience you are able to take away really does depend on how much effort you put in.
I was given a good amount of responsibility at the beginning which built up over the course of the internship as the team were able to assess the quality of my work. I presented portfolio trades to people across different areas of the business and I helped to develop fund monitoring tools that will continue to be developed and used going forward.
The skills I learnt and developed are less likely to be applicable at University in my degree but they will definitely be useful for graduate job level and above.
The Company
The team worked hard throughout the day but everyone was very amicable and it was clear everyone enjoyed working with one another. When interns are assessed on their fit within the organisation, fit within your team is definitely an important consideration.
The internship was very well organised from the initial training right through to the final review at the end.
Training and development was both formal (from internal/external providers) and informal through on the job training.
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Healthcare from home
Future employment opportunities at the organisation are very good. BlackRock is a growing firm willing to recruit those who perform very well.
The Culture
Interns would meet up regularly to go out for dinner, to bars and clubs.
Living in London is relatively expensive and the costs of socialising will be higher than other parts of the country but cost really depends on how much you want to spend.
Around work there were various places to go out in the evenings but also travelling across London is not a problem.
There were many opportunities to get involved with activities outside of work such as sporting events, charity days and music concerts.
