The Role
The job was really great as it was varied. No two days were ever the same and the range of tasks not only made it interesting but meant that I learnt a whole plethora of new skills.
My team were fantastic! I was the first intern to enter into the team so I had some reservations about how they would about having me on the team. However, I need not have worried! They were so welcoming, friendly and supportive which of course was key to making the job and whole experience enjoyable.
We were given 2 managers: 1 was task manager and the other was personal development manager. It was reassuring to know that if there was ever a problem with your role you could approach the personal development manager who was totally detached from the role. They helped with settling in to the life as a full time worker and gave tips on how to succeed. We also had regular meetings to track progress and set goals which was great.
There were times where I was really busy, other times where I was not so busy! I preferred to be busy as it meant the day went quicker but otherwise it was expected that you do some education or ask either you task manager or personal development manager for extra work. The benefit of this being you show that you are enthousiastic and a hard worker. IBM also had lots of workshop sessions for placement students which was a great way to expand my network and see what other roles IBM offer! Helping out with events like this was also a great way to show initiative if I found I did not have enough to do.
I was given a lot of responsibility and would say as much as any of the other permanent workers in the team. This was fabulous as I could start to run meetings and projects which was the part of the job I enjoyed the most.
The skills most developped were time keeping, organisation, working with a variety of other people and public speaking. I had ample opportunity to improve them at different intern sessions and during my day to day tasks. They are all indispensible skills which will be necessary for work in the future and they help in university life too! I am much more confident after having completed my placement.
The Company
The atmosphere varied on the place. I was lucky enough to be able to work from different offices. The bigger places like London were more lively but everywhere was generally dead on Fridays as people work from home.
Very well organised. The programme progressed throughout the year and everyone knew what to expect at each stage.
I had opportunities to take different course online and do some shadowing. We also had special days for interns to work on projects. The induction week was a really great start to the year and helped with questions we had about the company and work.

Working from home
I would happily return in the future. After having spent a year there I also have more of an idea about what specific area and graduate scheme I would apply to.
The Culture
Many of the locations had a good social scene with other students and it was a great was to meet new people.
It was not cheap but in the surroundings of London what do you expect.
Not too great but we did have a few social events.
The town I was placed in was fairly small but I made the most of travelling in the new area and also enrolling in evening language courses.
