The Role
PLEASE NOTE: This review was for a placement at General Motors prior to the amalgamation of Vauxhall and General Motors (The RateMyPlacement Team) I thoroughly enjoyed my time at GM. The work was varied and sometimes challenging but overall, I have learnt a great deal about many different areas of business.
Everyone in my department was very enthusiastic and helpful and I felt right at home. Throughout the year I took on more and more responsibility so that, by the end of my time there, I was creating investigative reports for senior management which were distributed to Retailers country-wide.
General Motors have a support system in place whereby, outside of your department you are assigned a mentor who you are able to meet with on a regular basis or simply when you are struggling during your placement. There is a large number of undergraduated working in different roles across General Motors based in Luton and so, there is always someone to talk to who is going through the same thing as you.
Overall there were monthly cycles in my workload whereby results became available at month end and so I would be very busy between this point and when I had to present my monthly analysis. Workload also grew over the course of the year as I was able to take on more responsibility.

The Company
My office was fairly laid back and enjoyable to work in. Everyone got along well and myself and the other undergraduates who worked their took to organising get togethers for colleagues across our departments.

Cuts in training programs resulted in a delay for undergraduate training. However we were given excel and presentation training and there are plans to increase the training investments with future undergraduates.

Working from home
General Motors is currently trying to pull itself out of serious financial difficulties and it is therfore difficult to predict the availability of graduate positions.
The Culture
With such a large number of undergraduates all living and working in one place, the social calendar was pretty packed!
Being down south is always a bit more pricey but Luton was fairly cheap. My accomodation was shared with other undergraduates and wasn't badly priced.
Luton may not have too much to offer aside from a couple of night clubs but the town is in a good location for nights out to Watford, Milton Keynes and London.
GM has a sports facility right by it's main headquarters which is only accesssibly to its staff and has excellent facilities. We also had the opportunity to take one afternoon per week to volunteer at local schools on Young Enterprise ventures.
