The Role
The working environment at Arup was very good. I got to see many different projects, though I wasn't given much significant work to do.
Everyone were very helpful when I asked for their help, especially the younger ones. They showed interest into advising me on different matters even if I didn't ask. Very friendly environment.
Lot's of support from my supervisor though he was quite busy all the time. Other people in the group also very keen to help.
Unfortunately I wasn't busy all the time. Since this was a short placement (6 weeks) I was hoping to get as much out of it as possible. Often I was given some very trivial tasks just to keep me busy, but I was hoping for something more advanced.
Very few tasks were actually critical. That was of course because often it was impossible with my experience to be given a critical task, but I believe there could have been some more important work for me.
Not very useful in my degree studies, but definitely going to come in handy in future work placements.
The Company
Depending on the day and the people I was working with it would vary. I was definitely enjoying it more when I was working in a group, but some times I was just working alone in rather boring staff.
Organising wasn't very good. I was hoping to have some preset work to work on and focus on, but most of the work I did was bits and pieces from different projects. I wish there was some more attention to the work given to the interns.
6 weeks was a rather short period for the company to actually spent time on training me on different software or techniques. As my supervisor told me, it would worth training me on AutoCAD if the internship was longer, but obviously this wasn't the case.
Company Parties/Events
It's a definitely an advantage to have worked in the company, but there is no fast tracking since the application procedure is rather short (application - assessment centre
The Culture
I got to go in some social events with the other interns, but also with some of the graduate engineers.
Well London is the most expensive you can get both in rent and socialising
The perks of being in London is that you have a big range of stuff you can do to enjoy yourself, even if the weather is doing its best to spoil it.
Other than the range of choices of activities in London, the company organised different events or trips quite regularly.
