The Role
It was a very enjoyable experience, the work was rewarding but also, importantly, the other staff I worked with were hugely welcoming and supportive.
On the work side, I was given jobs that I knew would contribute to projects the team were working on (including client work). On the social side also, during the internship and since, I have felt included by my colleagues.
This was especially important for actuarial work where there is a very steep learning curve, especially for someone reading a non-mathematically based degree like mine. All other members of staff were more than happy to answer any technical or theoretical questions I asked and actively ensured that there was nothing I got stuck on. Meanwhile, it was encouraged that if I wanted to work out a problem unaided, this was fine too.
The work was planned well so that I rarely had nothing to do or it felt like there were too many things going on at one time. I was never encouraged to stay late after work, although it was not a case of waiting for the day to end because work for that day had run out. Whenever there was a gap in-between bigger or more important tasks, there were less urgent, on-going tasks to pick up.
I feel that the level of responsibility was appropriate for an 8 week internship. I was not forced to take on any client work or work that might represent the company externally early on in the internship, but there were certainly opportunities to do so once I had a chance to settle in - for me this was the perfect balance.
I feel that confidence is the most valuable attribute that I developed during this internship in that I feel as though I appropriately handled what seemed to be a big challenge to my intellectual and professional ability. I also feel that my specific skills (regarding actuarial calculations etc.) will be invaluable to my career going forward.
The Company
There was a generally calm and concentrated atmosphere, but not in a strict way. It was clear that the staff were all there to work but the atmosphere was friendly and there were lots of social events for after work.
The internship was very well organised. Training was thorough, complete and well-spaced throughout the eight weeks and I was given a chance to experience different roles available within actuarial work.
I feel that the company invested very much in me, largely because of the extensive training and the inclusive nature of the team both professionally and socially.

Company Parties/Events
Very appealing - I have been offered and accepted a job.
The Culture
Yes - the interns all bonded well and early on in the internship, through sharing tasks, planning socials together and spending time on our lunch breaks and at social events together.
(London) The cost was high but generally speaking the other members of staff we worked with knew where to go to make our money go further.
Although we didn't spend too many nights going out specifically in the area I was working in, the social events that we did attend were great fun.
Loads of them! We were actively encouraged as interns to get involved in a variety of activities including company-wide sports competitions.
