The Role
From the very first day I was made to feel very welcome by all members of the office. I had a variety of different tasks and projects throughout my internship which helped to give me a great insight into the actuarial profession.
I felt like part of the team and not just someone who was there to do an internship. After completing pieces of work for other members of the team, I was always given feedback.
I had a mentor and a supervisor. Unfortunately during my first week, my mentor was on holiday, and so I felt like I didn't have as much support as I maybe would have liked during this initial week. However, other members of the team were there to help out, and when my mentor returned I had lots of support and guidance throughout the rest of my internship.
There were points where I was fairly quiet with client tasks. If I made the team aware that I didn't have much work to do, I was always given more tasks to help different members of the team. My work was varied too.
I felt that I was given just the right amount of responsibility that you would expect to receive during an internship. I worked on tasks for clients of the firm, for example data checks or preparing documentation for an actuarial valuation.
Completing this internship helped me to confirm that the actuarial profession was right for me. I felt that I was given a variety of tasks relating to triennial valuations in order to help me understand the profession as much as possible, and to have an insight into life as an actuary.
The Company
Everybody was very friendly.
There were set tasks that were required of me to assess my developing skills and also an individual project to complete by the end of the internship. There was also a weekly meeting with the actuarial team to explain what work each individual had to do.
I had a personal mentor and supervisor, both happy to assist me with any query I had about my tasks.
Company Parties/Events
If you work hard and get along well with the team (and there is a graduate job available within the team), I was told that it was highly likely you would be offered a graduate position. Thankfully, they offered me one!
The Culture
There were a few inter office events that were held during my internship including a netball tournament which I attended. There were also other events put on by members of the office, for example, a wine tasting evening. Also, if workload permitted, members of the team would often go out for lunch or drinks after work.
Leeds is quite a cheap city to go out in and, compared to many other cities, the cost of living is relatively low.
There are plenty of bars and clubs in Leeds city centre.
As stated above, I had the opportunity to enter the netball or football tournament and also other social activities organised by members of the team.
