The Role
My internship overall was a fantastic experience and I totally loved it. There is a great balance between work, training, networking events and fun.
I feel like my colleagues have always been very supportive. They treated me as a normal employee, had high expectations but in the meantime helped me out when I was occasionally struggling. I can see that my work and myself as an individual are highly valued by my colleagues.
I am very fortunate to have two excellent line managers, one setting high standards and the other one helping me approach various challenges. They have devoted sufficient time for my personal development including weekly catch-ups, insight meeting and informal coaching. I have learned not only how to complete my tasks, but also how to stand out in the professional environment.
There has been a great balance on a daily basis with a mixture of routine work and ad-hoc project work. My line manager heads up two teams so I was very fortunate to gain more exposure compared to other interns. I also got involved in several high-profile projects, providing me with a comprehensive taste for my division.
I was given a good balance of responsibility including being in charge of certain routine tasks, leading project work and assisting colleagues on a daily basis.
I think I have developed both technical including Excel and soft skills such as time management, communication, teamwork and problem solving. These have definitely boosted my performance in my last year of undergraduate study and put me in an advantageous position when I start my career.
The Company
Everyone not only works hard but also plays hard. It is a fun environment to be in.
HR have done an absolutely fantastic job.
Dedicated training, various mentoring programmes and networking opportunities have been presented to use. Plus my line managers also invested a lot of time to my personal development.
Subsidised Canteen
I got a job offer and I am looking forward to starting next year.
The Culture
Yes, a lot of social events have been organised by fellow interns.
I think in general it is affordable. The rent is higher than expected because I lived very close to the company. But Barclays has provided us with relocation allowance so it was basically covered by the allowance.
Nightlife was good and we always had a list of fun places to choose from for weekly team drinks.
Yes, there are various mentoring programmes, networking events, social events and volunteering events to get involved in.
