The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed working for Moto. After completing my training I was given real responsibility and contributed to my unit.
I bonded really well with my line manager which created a fun dynamic at work. My team valued my my input and we all bonded well over the year.
My line manager was always there to help me. If I ever needed any more help than that I could always call my general manager or contact head office if I was really stuck.
Due to the nature of the work place the pace of work changed dramatically. The busy times taught me to think on my feet whilst the quieter periods allowed me to focus on the details.
From day one I was given responsibility. As I became more familiar with the company I was given more and more control. My manager got me involved with a much as I felt comfortable with. It really was a case of the more you put in the more you get out.
When looking back at the year I realised how much I have learnt. The continuous learning and breadth of training made it easy to forget where I started from. It has taught me skills that will be useful whilst back at University but more importantly skills for the workplace.
The Company
Rather than being based in an office I was working on the shop floor. The majority of the time was good fun as it was important to set a positive tone to motivate my staff. During busy periods however focus did shift towards getting your head down and getting the job done.
I was the first year for the restarted placement year. Naturally there were a couple of teething issues that we encountered. Saying that however the placement was really well organised with the opportunity for me to visit other sites for training and meet my fellow placement students.
Moto really didn't hold back in terms of training. Specific placement workshops were held to help us develop ours skills. On top of this I was also involved in training to help use get to grips with Moto methods. My general manager wanted to get me involved with as much training as I could fit into my schedule.
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
I would need to complete the graduate application process to start the graduate scheme. Being a familiar face and knowing the inner workings of Moto has greatly increased my chances of getting through this process.
The Culture
Moto has locations all over the country. This obviously made it difficult to meet with other placement students. To counter this our training sessions were held in numerous locations to try and balance the amount everyone travelled. It was really good to meet up with the other students every so on and share experiences.
As mention previously Moto has sites all over the country. The benefit of this was that I could state a preference as to where I wanted to work. This allowed me to pick a site very close to my family home. This meant that I could live at home whilst I worked making expenses minimal.
I was based in my home town so I it allowed me to catch up with old friends down my local. I was located not too far away from Bristol so there was plenty opportunity to enjoy the nightlife.
Moto does a lot of charity work and I got involved with the site fundraising. On top of that there were opportunities to go on charity treks with other sites.
