The Role
The people were really nice and seemed to really care about me making the most of my time at the bank.
I felt like I could contribute at times, but given the short nature of the internship, it's difficult to feel like you're really needed.
My manager was great; they made sure I had work to be getting on with that I was interested in, and made every effort to give me advice, even suggesting people I should speak to in the future.
There were times when I wasn't under very much pressure at all, but equally times when I had deadlines to meet. I would say my work got a little repetitive and thin towards the end.
I wasn't given masses of responsibility, but given the importance of my business function, I wasn't really surprised. That said, I was in a position to speak to some very important people and I really benefitted from that!
The skills I developed won't be particularly helpful for university, but networking and communication skills will no doubt be helpful for any future career.
The Company
Everyone was very friendly and approachable. People do try to be quite energetic, especially with interns.
The internship seemed to have a good structure, with talks and presentations given alongside our day to day tasks. This gave us a good mix of practical and learning experience.
Barclays treat their interns really well; initiatives such as the meet and MD/Director scheme showed how willing important people in the bank were to give up their time, even for short term interns.
Subsidised Canteen
Company Parties/Events
I managed to secure a job - which was the ultimate aim!
The Culture
I met some really interesting and energetic interns. As usual, the personalities will vary depending on the division, but everyone was still perfectly friendly.
There's no doubt that London is expensive, but the firm do put on some Intern social events to try and help the social aspect. There's also always a cheaper option around if you're willing to look for it.
Although it's expensive, London does have a good variety of nightlight.
We were encouraged to take part in volunteering, and weren't restricted anywhere else.
