The Role
I got to visit a large variety of companies so every week was different. Everyone I worked with both at KPMG and there clients were lovely and helpful.
Everyone made me feel useful and part of the team, even when there wasn't a lot I could help with!
From day 1 I felt as if I could ask for help with anything I needed. This applied to everyone from first year auditors to partners.
There were some days where there wasn't much for me to do, but it couldn't really be helped. Most days I was kept busy and the work wasn't too overwhelming.
I was responsible for parts of the audit and felt like I could take initiative in going to ask the client for documents etc. But of course I did still get everything checked over and had to ask what to do next, but that's what I expected really.
I think mainly it has increased my confidence in my abilities and my communication skills. The technical things I learnt haven't really come in too handy yet, although I learnt a lot of general business things which is always useful.
The Company
The office was quite casual and everyone was very chatty and friendly, although there was a lot of work going on as well!
It was very well organised and planned from the beginning. Although sometimes an audit wouldn't take as long as expected so I might be moved somewhere else at the last minute. But I never felt as though I didn't know what I was doing. The only thing was that there were some days I was scheduled to be in the office with nothing planned for me to do.
I had a 2 day induction which taught us about the company and what services it offered. I also had access to online courses offered by KPMG which taught various audit areas. Mostly, training and development was on the job.
Subsidised Canteen
I had a final interview after my internship and have been offered a job starting in October 2014.
The Culture
I was the only intern in my office so there wasn't that social aspect available. There were some socials while I was there but unfortunately I wasn't able to attend them. However, we did go out for lots of nice lunches which was great for getting to know people more informally.
I was in the Liverpool office but worked all around the North West. It wasn't too expensive, although I was living at home during the internship.
Liverpool has a lot of great nightlife!
There were a few opportunities to get involved in charity events, but not much.
