The Role
My internship experience with KPMG was fantastic; I was given plenty of responsibility and felt that I was learning a great deal throughout the two months. It gave me an excellent insight into audit as well as what working in a big four environment is like. KPMG were very organised with the internship and had a well structured programme which not only gave me exposure to audit but also the other functions of the firm.
My colleagues helped me to settle in comfortably and were extremely friendly and sociable. They were sure to answer any questions that I had and encouraged me ask them for help should I need it. I would receive feedback on the work that I completed as well as explanations on how it would be used.
What I really liked about working at KPMG is the independence you are given; I would be given tasks and objectives to complete but would be guided should I have any queries. Most things were explained prior to starting the tasks.
This was dependent on the client and the type of work that was required. I usually always had work to get on with; sometimes it got busy, where I would need to work quicker, and other times there was less to do, perhaps if we were getting to the end of the audit.
I was extremely pleased with the amount of responsibility that I was given. The team would have a set of tasks that would need to be completed for review by the manager and so I would be required to meet this deadline along with the rest of the team. This meant that my work would need to be up to the standards required and that I would be responsible for certain tasks as my team members would be working on other tasks. I was also given many opportunities to deal with clients personally and was trusted to obtain the information that was required in a professional manner.
KPMG's internship experience gave me an excellent insight into what a role in audit would be like. It also helped me to develop skills in excel, my people skills and professional skills by working with clients.
The Company
The office atmosphere varied depending on the team but generally it was very relaxed. It would perhaps get a little more tense if there was an approaching deadline or if there was a partner present to review work. The team would have interesting conversations both work related and more social.
It was very organised and well structured. I had a clear and concise planner and was given a laptop with an email and calander set up for me so that I was able to communicate with colleagues and clients and be aware of my locations for the coming weeks.
We were given an induction to start with which involved team working activities and gave us an insight in to what the internship would offer. I was given excellent guidance and training with software on the job from my colleagues.

Company Parties/Events
If you work hard, perform well and show that you are commited to the job as well as KPMG, you are well within your chances for securing a permanent job with them for the following year.
The Culture
The interns were invited to all of the social events that were organised by colleagues in the office. There seemed to be a good number of social events from sporting activities to charity nights which kept me entertained throughout the internship.
The living costs in Nottingham were good.
The nightlife was ok, although it was during the summer and so there were no students about.
There were a lot of activities, particularly sporting activities such as football and cricket. There were also charity events and corporate social responsibility events.
