The Role
Overall I enjoyed the internship, the first week was a bit daunting being plonked straight into client sites and being given real audit work to do but after that I began to feel more comfortable/confident and the rest of the internship was great.
You instantly feel valued by your audit team as they understand how it is to be in your position given most of your team are recent graduates anyway. You feel part of the team straightaway.
I was assigned a buddy who had only been at the firm a year and luckily for me he was very helpful and always answered any queries I had or found out the answers from people more senior.
I was kept relatively busy throughout the duration of my internship. It is all dependent on your client so sometimes I was extremely busy and other times it was a bit more relaxed. Sometimes I found myself asking for more work on really slow days and the team always endeavoured to keep me busy which was good.
I was given alot more responsibility than I expected during the internship. Sure during the first few weeks I was mainly doing menial data checking/formatting etc but towards the end I was being given substantial parts of the audits to cover which was great.
The 'soft' skills I learnt such as team-working, talking to clients etc were the skills I felt I developed more than the actual technical skills. That's not to say that I didn't learn anything technical it's just in 8 weeks there wasn't alot of time to learn alot of accounting and due to starting with no knowledge I only really picked up the basics I needed to get through my work with. I assume during the graduate scheme when there is college time assigned is where the technical knowledge will be picked up.
The Company
General atmosphere in the office/client sites was generally average depending on which client team you were on but it was never too tense but given the nature of the work we were doing it wasn't all fun and games.
Internship for me was organised pretty well, I had a large variety of clients which I spent usually a week on at a time apart from a 2 week away job. So in terms of the actual work I was very impressed with the organisation but the social side left alot to be desired.
Company set us up with a laptop and any PC equipment you needed on the first day and that was very useful.
Subsidised Canteen
Was offered a graduate job after a final interview just 3 weeks after the placement ended which was very welcome!
The Culture
Social scene amongst the placement students was good, however due to the nature of the job in audit it was difficult to organise events with people being all over the country at any one time. However, we did manage a few meals, pub visits, nights out which were all good fun.
Central London is very expensive but due to going to university in the area I had an advantage over most of the other interns due to having knowledge of the cheap student-orientated places in the area.
Didn't really go out in Canary Wharf but went out a few times in central and had a good time.
There was various sports teams/events to go to outside of work which interns were welcome to attend.
