The Role
It was an incredible experience. I was given lots of work to do and was able to meet lots of different people in the organization. As with any job there were some tasks I had to do which weren't as interesting as others, but for the most part I had a great time doing interesting work.
At first, I did feel a bit like "the new guy" in my team and I think some members of my team weren't exactly sure what things they could ask me to do, and what I was there for. But as I worked with people longer I came to feel like a real member of the team I was working in and of organization as a whole.
I was given a great deal of support in my internship, by my team, people in HR and graduates. The only thing that would have improved it would be if I had been given a particular individual as a mentor/buddy. However, I received enough support from other people that not having this was not an issue.
I was given a lot of work to do and often had to stay relatively late. However, this was part of what I enjoyed most about my time at Hiscox. At the start of the internship, there were times where I didn't have lots of tasks to complete, but as the internship went on the workload got larger. I never felt like I didn't have anything to.
Most of the tasks I was given, I had complete responsibility over. I had to produce terms for renewal of policies, and although there was always someone to check these over and make sure they were acceptable, it was still me that had to get them done. As a group of interns we were also given responsibility for a large group project which we able to present to the Senior Leadership Group.
The skills I learnt were invaluable. I was given formal training on presentation and excel for example, plus I learnt a huge deal on the job about working to other people's deadlines and talking to clients. I will take all of these forward in my future career,.
The Company
I worked in a really good team. They were good fun to work with and helpful.
Everything ran largely like clockwork. Although I felt my team could have been more aware of what I was going to be doing when I arrived, everything else was very well structured and organized.
We were given two presentation training courses and an excel training course (the excel one was particularly crucial for me!). I was also given lots of Hiscox specific training on how to use their systems etc.
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
If you complete the internship then if you decide to apply for their graduate scheme, you don't go through the normal process along with everyone else. You get fast-tracked to the final stage of the application process.
The Culture
You get to know all the other interns really well, as you work on a large project with them. The only downside is that we started in a few groups and the first group had been there for 3 weeks when I arrived, which meant we couldn't finish the project together and they finished a few weeks earlier than the rest of us.
London, but the pay is very generous so don't turn it down because of that.
Great, the city is pretty lively and then you've got the rest of London to play with.
I went out a few times with my team, and a fair bit with the other interns, but there weren't really any other activities to get involved in.
