    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I had the most challenging yet rewarding 9-weeks. The opportunities were incredible and eye-opening compared to my time at University.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The culture and people at Bank of America Merrill Lynch was a major highlight of my internship. Colleagues across the firm were extremely friendly and welcoming. What stood out to me was the time other colleagues would spend with interns, teaching them more about the financial world and explaining their role within the bank.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout the course of my internship I had different projects/ tasks to work on. If I found myself without something to do I would always work shadow other colleagues to learn more. The structure of the internship scheme was very supportive and I always had a point of contact for work-related, personal or other issues.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This completely varied on a daily basis depending on the desk and also events in the market. In general I had just the right amount of work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • We were given responsibility from day one and this really helped us to challenge ourselves and try to impress other colleagues.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I felt like I learnt more in 9 weeks than in my entire 2 years at University so far! I gained new skills and knowledge which will help me to be one step ahead in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • All of my colleagues were friendly and welcoming from day one. People would go out of their way to get to know you better.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The Human Resources team worked very hard to make the programme as rewarding and as fulfilling as possible. We were given the opportunity to participate in a trading game with other interns across the industry. Within work we also had numerous networking/ speaker sessions with extremely senior people across the firm. A key highlight for me were the 'Women in Business' events where we could meet other women from the Bank. The Human Resources team also facilitated various social events after working hours which were a great opportunity to get to know colleagues in a social environment and away from the desk. The HR team arranged various intern events which were a great way to get everyone together after a long week. I enjoyed keeping busy and there were always things to do or new people to meet.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We undertook a week of training prior to starting the internship as well as on-the-job training throughout. The training we received was of very high-quality. We were given our own desks and Bloomberg terminals from day one which gave us the opportunity to learn as much as possible.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • We were told that we could be offered a full-time role after the internship and I felt very valued throughout the programme.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Nearly every Friday there were social events for interns. Individual desks would also invite their interns out with them.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was working in central London so the cost of living and socialising was inevitably very expensive. However we were given a living allowance and a very competitive wage to compensate for this.

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There were a wide range of bars and restaurants.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • An event I got involved with was the 'J P Morgan Corporate Challenge' which was an annual charity run held in Battersea Park. We were given information about this prior to the internship and it was great to represent the firm even in week two of the internship.
