    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The first few months were frustrating as I didn't know what to do. I had difficulty with chasing the documents and engine parts. Gradually I started to pick up things and started to enjoy my job role.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I'm not good at all with socialising with others.I found it very difficult to make good relationship with shop floor staffs initially. But gradually, I broke the barrier and found that I'm working with the best people to work with. My respect and kind attitude towards the shop floor staffs helped me to be a good team player.

    3/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I don't believe my supervisor gave me enough support in taking on the job role. I struggled for the first few couple of months. I had to take initiative to learn the business. I learnt that I need to find questions and shoot at my supervisor to know about my job role. However my supervisor was good at explaining things, I had doubt about. All you need to do is ask questions, and if you don't understand ask again and again and again. Your mentor won't disappoint you.

    2/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I work on GP7000 engines. We roll out only a few engines a year as compared with GE90 and CFM engines. Therefore the job role doesn't seems to be very busy, but relaxing and with lots of time to spend with shop floor staffs to get hands on experience on engines.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • As per the previous interns opinion, it will take you like almost 8 months to be fully confident with your job role and run the show on your own. So I'm waiting for that time. I can realise the increase in responsibilities that my mentor gave me over the past couple of months.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As I'm working in Engineering operations, all you need to use is your leadership skill and time management. The only module that I learnt in my uni which helped me a bit was Propulsion.

    1/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office constitutes people who are really dull and a few who rocks. I nice mix of people.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • As every intern works in different job role, GE doesn't have a specified and well laid out internship programme. It depends upon you and the allocated mentor.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • GE helped us to get training in Six sigma, which was great. But I think there is a lot more that everyone expects from GE.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • A majority of staffs are close to their retirement age, which gives graduates more opportunities to get into job.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other Operations intern who works along with me is a post graduate and has previous work experience. He was kind enough to help me and was a role model for me to learn how I should be taking responsibilities.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cardiff is a nice place to live, with low cost of living.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I'm not interested in going for parties. So never bothered about it.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • GE organises health ahead activities which help us to get involved in volunteering, raising money for good cause.
