The Role
Provided interesting and varied projects in a short amount of time but could have been more organised initially, in terms of me getting started with work.
The people at Arup are very friendly and great to work with.
I had previously worked here while completing my training scheme (like an apprenticeship) so I already knew a good amount, but there was usually someone around to ask for advice on issues I was unsure with. Working over the summer months sometimes proved hard to get hold of people due to annual leave.
Some days were very busy other days were not so busy. A constant amount of work is a problem but this is due to clients deadlines not so much Arup's fault.
This may have been due to prior experience but I was given a lot of responsibility on projects at Arup.
I had already gained a lot of the skills used on the job at Arup but things do move on over the period of a year and I was given more engineering responsibility which helped develop my skills further.
The Company
The office atmosphere was generally good, not as busy as usual due to summer holidays.
Reasonably well organised I was lined up to work on certain projects but there were some days where i was not very busy at all.
The company run a very good continued professional development scheme as well as graduate schemes. Arup also supplys training to all related programs you will use in your everyday job.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Future prospects with the organisation are very good and they have a very good reputation within the industry.
The Culture
I was the only placement student but I knew a lot of my colleagues previously, I do feel more social events at the company are needed though.
I lived at home while completing the placement, so was very easy for me.
Compared to where I go to university (Nottingham) solihull (the nearest town) and Birmingham really can not be compared to Nottingham. I may be biased though as I have been out in solihull and Birmingham a lot of times and may just be fed up of it.
I played football and cricket with Arup while completing my placement.
