The Role
As a non-cognate I gained a great understanding of what the roles and responsibilities of a project manager were and I was involved in a variety of interesting projects with different members of the team.
Everyone made me very welcome and was willing to take time and explain anything to me that I was unsure about.
I received invaluable advice from various employees about what to expect from a career in project management and as a non-cognate applicant how best to approach obtaining a career in the sector. Whilst I was give responsibility on the internship, I never felt overwhelmed and employees made sure I understood the task before I undertook it.
I undertook my internship in August when the building industry is quite quiet and employees are on holiday.
As a non-cognate I could not be given a huge amount of responsibility as I didn't have the relevant theoretical or conceptual knowledge. However, they trusted me to undertake various tasks on different projects which were really interesting and enabled me to feel that I was contributing to the team's efforts.
The internship was a great experience, I learnt key business skills and gained a great insight into the industry which has confirmed to me that this is a career I would like to pursue. Jones Lang LaSalle is a great firm and made me feel very welcome.
